How would you feel if your significant other told you a HUGE secret 19 years into the relationship? For this guy, the secret was enough to ruin their marriage.
First reported by Belgian paper, Het Nieuwsblad, the couple got married in 1993. Coming from Indonesia, there were legal issues raised by Belgian immigration authorities. They had doubts about the authenticity of her birth and identity papers but ultimately accepted them at the end.
For 19 years the marriage went well. ‘She was always a good mother to my children, and also a fantastic cook,’ Jan reveals. He even says that their intimate life was great. He had two children from past marriages and was glad that his new wife didn’t want anymore kids.
But after visiting her hometown in Indonesia, one of her cousins let a secret slip. Jan’s wife was born a man.
Jan mentioned this slip up to his son, and the son said he had also heard the same rumor. Jan violently confronted his wife and demanded he tell her the truth. She confirmed that the rumors were true. She was born male but had gender reassignment surgery and was now a woman.
The couple still live together after Belgian courts refused to allow Jan to kick her out of the family home. ‘That person has deliberately deceived him for years, even scammed. Presumably she has also forged documents used here to get a residence permit. The children, who for years have lived with her, are devastated,’ says his lawyer Lillane Verjauw.
